AGENT NORTH
SOME THINGS ARE HARDER TO FACE THAN OTHERS
Character Information
Personal:
Canon:
Physical:
- North is a soldier from a war-torn galaxy that has been fighting aliens bent on humanity's destruction for over 25 years. North has known nothing else in his life but the conditions of war.
- North has a twin sister, who was assigned the matching codename to his—so for a long time into the project, North Dakota fought with South Dakota by his side.
- The headcanon name I have given North is Andrew Engelsen. Unless and until I get a South in game, his sister may be referred to as Alexis.
- North has zero problems sharing his real name with potential friends, and will give people the option of calling him either by the moniker North or by his real name. He doesn't like nicknames, though; he is Andrew, not Andy or Drew.
Canon:
- Though North comes from a comedy canon, it can be kind of dark in places. Themes that are present in North's canon include genocide, war, ethics, sacrifice, and torture.
- The method and results of Alpha's torture are always with North, as he received the childlike Theta fragment as a partner. Theta is likely to speak up in any thread, and may express curiosity or fear about whatever is going on.
Physical:
- North is tall, and it's obvious that until he became a soldier he was rather gangly. Thankfully, he has become well-muscled, and he maintains his physique despite the two years he recently spent on the run from the Project.
- Vital statistics:
○ Height: 6'7" (200 cm)
○ Weight: 249 lb (113 kg)
○ Hair: Blonde
○ Eyes: Ice blue
○ Gender: Male
○ Race: European - North speaks in a fairly neutral standard Midwestern American accent. The beginning of this video contains a good sample of his speaking voice. North is the one in purple armor.
- North has several remnants of a wilder childhood, such as the lip ring scar on his lower left lip.
- North is a trained sniper, and can use a sniper rifle almost as adeptly without a scope as he can with it. Adjacent to this, he's got unmatched patience, being willing to sit and wait for his quarry for hours without moving and without complaining.
- North is a physical powerhouse, though he's not as adept at hand-to-hand fighting as some of his teammates. There's a reason he consistently ranked around sixth on the leaderboard, after all. However, if you're interested in your character sparring with or fighting against North, please discuss the outcome with me.
- North is also skilled at vehicle repair and equipment maintenance.

SETTING BACKGROUND
Red vs. Blue is a Halo fanfiction machinima—its creators would probably dispute my use of the word ‘fanfiction’ there but fundamentally, that’s what it is. As such, it uses many elements from Halo canon, although it deviates at many places as well. Its seasons are set out of order; the first five seasons deal with the simulation soldiers in the canyon known as Blood Gulch, but later on the viewer learns that these soldiers are there for training purposes for the agents of Project Freelancer. This program was created to test the use of AI in partnering with its agents, but as they were only allowed one AI for their experiments, they took drastic means and tortured the AI into splitting into pieces. Eventually the whole program fell apart, and North was one of the casualties of this.
HISTORY
This background will be in chronological order, although the events shown in the actual program are not.
PERSONALITY
North is a trained mercenary soldier, willing and able to confront dangerous situations and improvise solutions. He’s a realist and knows the importance of following rules and regulations. He seems to put priority on following orders as close to the letter as he can, though he will deviate when circumstances call for him to deviate. He’ll still worry about the consequences, though. He couches his concerns with an easy humor, but he can’t help but ask around when he gets called in to answer for one such deviation to find out what his potential consequences could be.
He’s known for being supportive, and at one point the project’s counselor even refers to his ‘nurturing nature.’ Perhaps nothing in life has given him cause to learn how to calm and mentor others than his relationship with his twin sister, South. She is rash and impulsive, often mouthing off when something upsets or irritates her. While he seems unwilling to call her out on her outbursts in front of other people, he usually goes to find her in the aftermath to calm her and talk her through what’s upsetting her. This isn’t to say that he likes putting up with her behavior, however. When she can’t see his face he reacts with a restrained exasperation, shaking his head in the knowledge that soon he’s going to need to intervene in her anger once again.
By nature, he’s contemplative, and though he may gently tease his friends, he’s not as much of a joker as fellow agent York. His more introspective nature leads to an easy camaraderie between the two of them, and York’s seen going to North more than once to help him think something through. He’s even something of a mentor to the younger Washington, easing things over when York’s antagonizing of Washington goes a little bit too far. When sharing his opinion he often pauses before speaking, as though to make sure he has his thoughts straight before presenting them.
He has a strong sense of morality, but he also places his trust in the leadership. Therefore, he’s more reluctant to conclude that they aren’t “the good guys” than York, even when York shares his suspicions. Though he had been forming a friendship with Tex, it’s likely that his trust in York, along with the evidence Tex has in her possession, is what persuades him to go along with the plan to break in and rescue the Alpha AI. In the end, in the choice between right and wrong, he casts his lot in with them rather than continue to help the leadership carry out unethical research.
The contrast between his personality and his sister’s comes to a head as things in the project start to break down. He chooses to act as the inside man, knowing that he won’t be able to convince South to go in on the plan. He relies on his persuasive skills and their history of standing together to convince her to leave with him once the break-in has already taken place. Unfortunately his trust in his ability to influence his sister ends up being his downfall; Tex warns him that his sister is an opportunist, and though he admits to Tex that South has acted inappropriately in her quest for an AI of her own, it seems he was taken by surprise by the fact that in the end, he couldn’t trust her to do everything she could to keep him from falling to the Meta.
Of special note is North’s relationship to his AI, Theta. AIs can choose how to project themselves and how they sound, and Theta is childlike in both voice and his hologram body's proportions. Theta is timid and fearful when he is first introduced. North was chosen specifically to host Theta because of Theta’s anxiousness. Unlike other agents, North is reluctant to shut his AI down to spare himself the difficulty when Theta’s worries and fears become overwhelming. Instead, North stays up late into the night to walk the halls and comfort the AI, comparing it to the way his father would take South for car rides to lull her to sleep. He shows himself successful at the task from the start, coaxing the AI to bring his avatar out from hiding and to speak more directly to his fellow agents. Over time Theta begins to seek North’s approval, creating animations such as of fireworks or himself riding a skateboard, simply to hear North compliment him on them. North teaches Theta that they can trust one another; once Theta learns he can rely on North, he seeks North’s reassurances whenever a new situation presents itself.

POWER SELECTION
Gun/No Powers
ABILITIES
North has been recruited into an elite force of mercenary soldiers. As such he is skilled in hand-to-hand combat, self-defense tactics, shooting, and survival. His specialty is the sniper rifle; he’s nearly as accurate shooting without a scope as he is with it. In the confrontation with his sister, he’s seen dual-wielding sniper rifles, one in each hand.
North is good at calming people down, helping them compromise, helping them feel better, and suggesting things that will help them feel comforted. Given his skills in dealing with Theta it would seem he would be excellent with children, should he find himself around any.
North is incredibly patient, a skill that helps him both in his role as a sniper and his attempts to help others.
SETTING/SUITABILITY
➤ How do you expect your character to respond to the setting? Even if they plan to rebel in the long term, will they be able to at least obey enough to not get shocked to death?
North is going to think, first and foremost, about how he can help other people who may be struggling to integrate into the setting. He will possibly be looking for ways to get back where he came from but that won’t really be a priority. He’ll just want to help everyone else who hates it there.
➤ What do you hope to do with your character long-term?
I’d love for him to bond with some people, anyone really, but especially younger characters who might remind him of Theta, or even characters who remind him of his sister.
➤ Does your character currently have skills that would allow them to adapt, survive, and do the heroic things being asked of them? If your character doesn't, do you think they'd have the capacity to learn quickly?
He definitely has this type of skillset.
➤ If they're not used to cooperating with others, what makes you think they'll be able to adapt to cooperating with the group?
n/a
➤ Will your character have long-term plans to rebel against Jorgmund? If so, how? Will they betray the other PCs and cooperate with Jorgmund? If so, how do you plan to handle the negative CR that might arise?
North will be wary of Jorgmund, having dealt with the way things were in Project Freelancer not so long before his death. However, North isn’t much of a leader, at least not when it comes to this type of thing. He won’t instigate anything, but he’ll keep an eye out for anyone else who’s developing this type of plan.

- Are you more of a hunter or a gatherer?
[ North nods, just once. He knows the answer that fits the bill in this case, particularly if it’s a skill they actually need on the station. ]
I’m a hunter, definitely. I know not everyone has the skills and capacity that I have to get food by killing it, so I’d want to make sure to do the best job about hunting the food that I could. Why, you...need someone to do it?
[ At this point the polygraph machine seems to emit a response that leads the Jorgmund rep to decide North is lying, and he’s asked the question again with some strenuous admonishments about being truthful. North tilts his head in confusion. ]
Why would I...lie about that? I’m a hunter. I kill people, I’m sure I could kill an animal. I mean, I think. If it was for food. Though…I suppose picking berries sounds pretty nice.
- What is your least favorite thing about humanity?
[ North frowns to himself, considering everything that had gone on at Project Freelancer for just a moment. He doesn’t like to think about those times; he ruminates on it too often. ]
I think it’d have to be the willingness to hurt other people in order to get ahead. Or for any reason, really, but people being greedy like that really gets to me. I don’t understand it. Just...be nice to people. Consider their feelings as being as important as your own, you know?
- What's your biggest personal flaw?
[ North shifts in his seat, then snickers lightly. ]
Okay, this sounds like one of those answers that flips a positive trait around into a negative, I know, but I just care too much, you know? I don’t seem to have the capacity to let things go when I think I can help someone. And maybe they reject it, coming from me, but I keep trying anyway. I don’t know why. It’s like a compulsion.

ADDITIONAL INFO
Just to make it clear, I am intending North to arrive with his AI, Theta, intact. The AIs are implanted in the agents’ bodies via a chip implanted in the base of the skull, so it should be no issue at all for him to retain him. I also hope for him to retain his power armor with the domed energy shield modification, but I understand this equipment will not be allowed except in certain missions.
FINAL QUESTIONS
The players won't know what the mods are doing with these questions until sometime later.
➤ Will your character suspect some kind of guiding intelligence has brought them to the game? Or will they think it was random or done by Jorgmund?
He’ll think it was Jorgmund.
REVISIONS
➤ Personal History
North, whose given name is Andrew Engelsen, grew up on an Inner Colony planet among many people who, like him, were descended from various Scandinavian peoples. North's family was poor and he and his sister shared a bedroom with a rickety bunk bed in it in a 3rd floor apartment. Despite their poverty, and their parents trying their best to raise their twins, the two ended up spending much of their time after school hours alone. North's more mature and responsible nature clashed with South's impulsivity, so he often intervened when South would do things like scrap with older teens on the basketball court and the like. However, he was also very defensive of her, so he was just as likely to enter the fray if someone was being particularly cruel to her.
The twins enlisted the instant they were old enough to, and left just after high school graduation. South was angry about North's enlistment at first, because he did it to follow suit after her rash decision to do so, but the two ended up being assigned to the same company and she grew to be happy he was there with her.
My headcanon for the reason most Freelancer agents were recruited was that they were skilled soldiers who got into some kind of scrape and were slated to be court-martialed. North and South ended up getting into some kind of situation where they were either able to sacrifice their own lives for the rest of their unit, or choose to save each other, and they made the latter choice.
➤ Theta
Theta is good at doing calculations that would assist North in aiming thrown munitions, firing weapons accurately, or predict the angle of falling obstacles. Controlling North's bubble shield also involves proper calculations as to what size it should be and the exact moment it should be deployed or turned off. He also contains various functions that involve creativity, such as the fireworks show he created to entertain North.
➤ Powers
North's bubble shield was limited by the mods to lasting 10 seconds, or merely 5 if under heavy fire. It will also need a recharge time of half an hour. Mods will approve or deny which missions he will have his armor and bubble shield.

HISTORY
This background will be in chronological order, although the events shown in the actual program are not.
- An AI scientist named Leonard Church loses his wife in the midst of securing his education in the field.
- He raises his daughter all alone, but manages to get his PhD in artificial intelligence.
- The leadership of the UNSC Earth Government continues to seek a “magic bullet” solution to ending the war with the aliens, which has been raging for over 20 years.
- Dr. Church gains funding for Project Freelancer, and begins to be known as the Director. Although he is intending to partner all the agents with AIs, he’s only granted funding for one. He decides to use his own mind as a basis for the AI, naming it Alpha. During its creation, however, the memory of his wife splits off as its own entity. This causes him to realize he can torture the AI and cause other fragments to split off. His employee, known as the Counselor, begins to help with this.
- Simulation bases are built, allowing the agents to train while interacting with real, if incompetent, simulation soldiers.
- The Director hires his own daughter to be an agent in the program. She is designated Agent Carolina.
- He assigns the memory of his wife that had split off of Alpha as an agent as well, putting her in a robot body and calling her Agent Texas.
- Agent Texas is active during several missions, during which the Project kidnaps a Huragok alien, which can repair any type of technology. The Director uses this alien to further his research in splitting AIs via torture.
- North is assigned the childlike AI fragment, Theta, and the two are seen to be a competent pairing when it comes to soldiering.
- Eventually Agent Connecticut defects, having delved into the Project's files and realizing what is going on. She leaves the evidence behind for Agent Texas to find.
- Texas finds the evidence and also defects, leading a break-in to attempt to rescue Alpha and Agent Carolina. North is part of the team that defects with her, and he acts as the inside man during the break-in. The mission fails, and the spaceship that is functionally working as the Project’s headquarters crashes into the planet where the simulation bases are headquartered.
- Agent North and his sister South leave, running away in order to rescue his own AI, Theta, from the entity known as the Meta. The Meta is the team of Sigma and his host, Maine, who begin gathering the other AIs so that they may be reassembled and become a full human.

Warnings: Though North comes from a comedy canon, it can be kind of dark in places. Themes that are present in North's canon include genocide, war, ethics, sacrifice, and torture. North himself is a caring dude, but he will smother you if you let him. He can be codependent, also.

- Backtagging: I prefer to play out what I can of a thread in a fairly timely manner. If it's looking like what is happening between our characters is going to have a major impact on their CR longterm, I'll keep backtagging for some months, but for the most part if it's beyond the current plot and it's not going much of anywhere I'm liable to lose interest.
- Threadhopping:I'm all for this in network posts as long as things are open (i.e. there's no indication the transmission is private). For logs, I'd like to be advised you're going to do this, but will most likely be open to it.
- Fourthwalling:No, thank you.
- Off limits: Noncon/rape.
- Warn first: I don't really have any triggers, though I am uncomfortable with elaborate descriptions of gore and such. Putting a cw in the subject line for anything upsetting should cover me.
[IC]
- Physical affection: North will take this as a cue that a greeting hug upon every encounter is welcomed, so be sure you want to set the precedent.
- Physical violence: North is skilled in hand-to-hand and shooting, so your character may find him a formidable opponent. Check with me before initiating anything.
- Romance: North is demisexual biromantic, so with proper build-up and initiation of a friendship, this is possible.
- Use of telepathy/mind reading: Yes. North is a bit of an open book at the best of times and has no reason to know how to defend himself from such abilities.
- CRAU recognition: under certain circumstances. Please contact me before proceeding.
- Facetwins: No.
